I am Trying To Love You Into Wilderness

This is wild
You followed the smoke signal to my house
In Alaska or wherever it was
I sent signals through my smokestack
And warned the dogs of your arrival
The dogs
They were wild
Wild and hungry
Nature-drunk
Those dogs and my love for you
And the signal fire
I got mad
It was not my photo on your mantle
Not my ring on your chain
But in the night we were star-bound
Crossing and re-crossing the same snowy hills
Me in your house
You in mine
We called out to the other
We fetched rare gems from the night
A turnip
A leaf of lettuce
Rabbits
We cooked them
Ate some other things
In the spring the grass shocked us
It was watered down, sapped by the ice caps
One day I felt the wind on my face
It was a blessing
Terrible in its kindness
Gossamer spit
In bed we talked about it
And the life ahead
Which crops to plant
Which ones to save for the next season
