abide with me

Last night I swear I saw a coffin sailing on the asphalt.
Like that movie where this guy drags a coffin around
for someone to die in. I had even prepared a speech for the occasion:
Out here there are wolves everywhere
if you know how to look. I keep my guns in my pockets
with my liquor and women. I keep my fingers
on the chicken for I am always getting hungry.
I am waiting around for something. For anything.
I am working on this speech. It goes: The asphalt
is a sea and I will part it. This is the kind of parking lot
a man could drown in. I am working on a speech that begins:
Come on in boys, the water is fine. And they do.
They are up to their necks in it, and singing
soft and low, like a hymn. I tell them: I want you to tell me
that you will not destroy me. We will not destroy you. I tell them:
I want you to sing it. Again and again. I want you to sing
We will not destroy you until there is nothing left of either of us.
