Cause and Effect
in a Prison

To sell pumpkins,
it helps to shoot
some out of a cannon.

Have you ever tried to put a feel
back into corn? Abraham Lincoln
said that the Civil War
was about loneliness,
but it wasn’t about loneliness.

We should citizen’s arrest each other
for wandering so far
from the graves of our ancestors.
In many other countries
that’s impossible to do.

The holding room
was a hell hole.
It was a box to fill.
I change my belt buckle.
Why should I mourn?

The noise upstairs subsides.
I spend the afternoon
deciding what to plant.
